World Food Day 2020: Supporting Organizations to Grow, Nourish, Sustain, Together

An estimated 690 million people went hungry in 2019. That figure went up by 10 million from 2018, and by nearly 60 million in five years. In Nigeria in April 2020, food inflation had risen to 15% compared to 14.7% in December 2019. With rising food prices, inter alia, there’s an indication that COVID-19 is likely to hamper the attainment of food security in Nigeria which will in turn affect the realization of the SDG Goal 2: End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture. SDG Goal 2 aims to ensure that “everyone everywhere has enough good-quality food to lead a healthy life.”

Access to Water – A Dividend of USADF C.A.R.E.S Intervention for Kangire Community

One of the best safeguards against coronavirus is handwashing, especially with running water. However, a disturbing challenge is the declining percentage of Nigerians who get their water supply through piped networks – this has plunged from 31 per cent in 1990 to less than 7 per cent in 2017. In Jigawa State, the case is not any different. According to WaterAid, constant water supply is considered a luxury and the shortage of piped water is a long-standing problem in the state, where “Outbreaks of water-borne diseases are very common.”

Readjusting for The Good of All

Dr Saeed Jumah is a beneficiary of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) grant. He provides dental services and awareness to his community in Kano State. Prior to Covid-19 and the promotion of physical distancing guidelines that ensued, a normal day for Dr Jumah would have been one-on-one consultations, procedures like dental extractions, root canal treatments, etc. – with each case treated as it comes. With the increasing rate of infection in Kano State, Dr Jumah has adjusted operations in line with global guidelines and preventative protocol.
