Dr Benson’s Fight Against Covid-19 Infodemic!

A few weeks after the onset of the deadly Coronavirus pandemic, came the onset of an equally deadly (if not deadlier) enemy – infodemic, a term that Wiktionary aptly defines as “An excessive amount of information concerning a problem such that the solution is made more difficult.” Little wonder that the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres decried in a tweet that blatant lies are being spread at a petrifying rate: “We are seeing a dangerous outbreak of misinformation, from harmful health advice and hate speech to wild conspiracy theories. Our common enemy is #COVID19, but our enemy is also an “infodemic” of misinformation.” To which he quickly offered a solution: “To overcome the #coronavirus, we need to urgently promote facts and science, hope and solidarity over despair and division.”

Commemorating International Widows’ Day 2020!

June 23 is International Widows’ Day. Today is set aside by the United Nations to draw attention to the voices and experiences of widows and to galvanize the unique support that they need. In many parts of the world – including Nigeria, losing a husband is not just about coping with the grief, pain of loss, loneliness, or the financial aspect of performing the burial rites.

OSC College of Fashion Realigns to Stop Covid-19 with Face Masks

A few months ago, being seen wearing a mask in public would have elicited curious stares and jeers from people around you, but they have sadly become the visual metaphors of the novel coronavirus pandemic – an unfortunate reminder of our current reality. The reason for this is obvious: wearing a medical mask, according to the WHO, can limit the spread of certain respiratory viral diseases, including COVID-19. And wearing a face mask could reduce community transmission especially when it is used in ‘public transport and crowded areas,’ according to Ben Cowling, head of epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of Hong Kong.

WORLD EARTH DAY 2020: How DDI is Championing an Eco-Conscious World Via Renewable Energy

Fifty years ago, precisely on April 22, 1970, when people around the world celebrated the first Earth Day to raise awareness about mankind’s role in protecting our natural world, it is on record that over 20 million Americans ventured outdoors and protested in favour of a more eco-conscious society. Although this is the 50th anniversary – which is worth rolling out the drums for – the day may sadly be taking a back seat as COVID-19 – the disease caused by the novel coronavirus that has so far affected over 2.5 million people and with over 177,000 deaths according to Johns Hopkins University, is taking the centre stage.

2020 in Review (1): How DDI Contributed to the Success Stories of Producer Groups & Coops

Not a few people are excited to leave 2020 behind – once and for all, considering the huge losses and distortions of life’s rhythms – all occasioned by a devastating global pandemic. But we wanted to take a moment to access how we fared in some of our core duties of providing technical assistance, business support, enterprise management and market access services to our agricultural and agro-allied cooperatives and producer groups in 2020. With key indices like growth facilitation, capacity development and strengthening, entrenchment of accountability and project sustainability, we gathered some feedback from grant beneficiaries on the contributions of DDI, highlighting how that impacted on their project implementation in 2020.
