The staggering rise in unemployment rates in Nigeria, reaching 33.3% in the last quarter of 2020, has brought forth unprecedented challenges for the nation, particularly affecting its youth. With over a third of the labour force either unemployed or underemployed, urgent interventions are essential to drive economic growth and create opportunities for the nation’s vibrant youth population.
In response to this critical situation, the United States African Development Foundation (USADF) and the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF) forged a strategic partnership in May 2019, pledging up to $10 million over five years to invest in youth training and employment in Lagos State. This collaboration birthed the USADF-LSETF Employability Program, aimed at enhancing the market competitiveness of youth in Lagos.
DDI’s Role in Youth Empowerment
As the Implementing Partner of USADF in Nigeria, Diamond Development Initiatives (DDI) plays a pivotal role in the execution of the USADF-LSETF Employability Program. DDI is actively contributing to the reduction of youth unemployment by providing globally competitive skills to young individuals in Lagos State. The program spans five years, empowering 3,000 young people annually across various sectors, including technology, creatives, education, health and beauty, hospitality and tourism, business support, financial services, and construction.
Impactful Results
DDI has collaborated with over 40 Vocational Training Organizations, training over 7,000 young people. Impressively, over 50% of these trainees have gained access to paid placements within their chosen sectors. The success stories emerging from this initiative are both inspiring and transformative.
