DDiAdmiNAs the Implementing Partner of the U.S. African Development Foundation (USADF) in Nigeria, we are proud to share insights from the Power Africa 2023 Annual Report, showcasing a decade of remarkable progress toward ending energy poverty in sub-Saharan Africa. This report is a testament to the collective efforts of the partners, funders, and the communities that have been a part of the project. DDI remains committed to advancing sustainable energy solutions that not only provide access to power but also catalyze economic growth and improve overall community well-being.
The Power Africa Annual Report 2023 marks a decade of transformative efforts to illuminate and energize sub-Saharan Africa. Since inception, this initiative has sought to end energy poverty by 2030, achieving remarkable milestones along the way. Some of them are as follows:
- 14,300 MW of power projects closed, with 7,600 MW already bringing light to millions.
- 41.3 million homes and businesses now enjoy new or enhanced connections.
- Assistance extended to 42 countries, touching nearly 200 million lives.
- Over 45 million tons of CO2 emissions prevented, contributing to a greener future.
- 7,665 KM of power lines reached financial close.
- And many more.
By strengthening and expanding electricity grids and promoting off-grid solutions like solar home systems, it has fostered regional energy markets and enhanced cross-border electricity exchange. Moreover, prioritizing renewable resources and bolstering U.S. and African private sector innovation has not only accelerated a carbon-free future but also reduced over 10 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
Significant 2023 highlights include activating 1,042 megawatts of clean energy, delivering electricity to 33 million people through 6.7 million new connections, and enhancing digital and health infrastructure across the continent. In Nigeria, Power Africa’s support, through the U.S. African Development Foundation (USADF), has empowered renewable energy entrepreneurs and bolstered the agricultural sector. This multifaceted approach illustrates Power Africa’s comprehensive strategy to meet its ambitious goals, showcasing the pivotal role of international partnerships, innovative financing, and a steadfast commitment to sustainability and equitable growth.
“A feasibility study funded by Power Africa partner the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) laid the foundation for the development of 95 mini-grids: 80 dedicated to community use and 15 for commercial, industrial, and institutional clients. Implementation at several sites is underway. Power Africa through USAID in collaboration with the Tony Blair Institute supported the implementation of Nigeria’s ongoing National Mass Metering Program, by coordinating the procurement for six million meters, 50 percent of which are currently installed or financed.”
